Head of Health, Safety, Security and Fire

Job Description

Finegreen are currently supporting a large NHS Trust, this individual will provide strategic leadership, advice and direction ensuring the delivery of a comprehensive first-class Health and Safety service throughout the organisation.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Act as the competent person as described under the terms of Regulation 7 of the Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999 and is responsible for ensuring organisational compliance with statutory duties;

  • Responsible for ensuring the Trust has effective policies, systems and processes in place to meet the obligations and requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act and associated Regulations;

  • Take the lead role in the organisation for all matters of health & safety and associated underpinning legislative requirements. This includes the provision of health and safety reports and information to senior meetings internally and externally;

  • Promote leadership and ownership of Health & Safety management throughout the organisation to ensure that risks are managed as an integral part of business delivery;

  • Using expert Health and Safety knowledge, the post-holder is responsible for advising managers, representatives and colleagues on any/all issues relating to health and safety at work, and for the development, delivery and co-ordination of health and safety training for colleagues;

  • Provide sources of assurance on Health and Safety and the wider compliance agenda for the Trust including providing data for reports and regulatory bodies;

  • Engage the workforce in the promotion and achievement of safe and healthy working conditions and establishing effective ‘upward’ communication;

  • Provide expert advice across the Trust on elements of risk assessment that relate to health & safety of staff and patients; leadership and influence is required to inform and regulate departmental, directorate, and Corporate Risk Registers;

  • Develop, maintain and foster close working relationships with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Police, Crown Prosecution Service, Environment Agency and other external agencies, providing evidence and information to external agencies as required.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Educated to Degree level qualification or substantial health & safety knowledge and experience;

  • Chartered Membership of IOSH;

  • Highly developed knowledge of health and safety regulations, management systems and processes (HSG65);

  • Extensive and demonstrable knowledge and experience in the application of Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the associated regulations, approved codes of practice, guidance and practical implications and applications;

  • Experience of health and safety provision in a large and complex organisation, knowledge of local security management within a healthcare setting.
