Financial Accountant

Job Description

We are working with an NHS organisation who are seeking to appoint an Interim Finance Accountant for an immediate start where possible.

The role will be a FTC for 12 months or a permanent appointment and will be at Band 7 under the AfC Pay scales.

Key responsibilities will include:

Assist the Head of Financial Accounting in all aspects of the systems, processes and controls involved in the day to day management of Cash and Financial Accounting;

Within a framework established by the Head of Financial Accounting, the Financial Accountant will have autonomy to direct their own workload and relationships with the finance team and other colleagues;

Report to and deputise for the Head of Financial Accounting;

Enhance the day-to-day management of the Financial Accounting department, including the development of the process for producing the organisations monthly and quarterly financial returns and Annual Financial Statements;

Assist the Financial Accounting team in responding to Internal and External Audit reports and in implementing agreed recommendations;

Lead on all aspects of the Charitable Fund accounting, preparation of papers for the board meetings, completion of the Annual Charitable Funds Accounts including liaising directly with the Auditors;

Ensure that internal financial controls support an effective system of financial governance in line with the Standing Orders, Standing Financial Instructions and Financial Procedures and Protocols, statutory and best practice requirements;

Input into the production of monthly finance accounting to ensure deadlines are met;

Review all applicable guidance and perform due diligence ensuring relevant officers are notified of any key issues;

Manage Cash and Agreement of Balances procedures of the annual accounts, and ensures production of the statutory returns for these areas;

Support any other aspects of the year end accounts process as required;

Review all appropriate working papers and ensure a good audit trail of all workings are in place to enable external auditors to access relevant information during the audit process;

Ensure full review of all control accounts are reconciled on a monthly basis and that issues identified are communicated and resolved promptly;

Review all relevant local financial systems and procedures on an annual basis and updates them as required.

The ideal candidate will have:

Qualified CCAB accountant and be actively undertaking Continuing Professional Development (CPD);

Experience and full knowledge of the objectives and procedures of all other departments within the Finance Directorate and their relation to the financial reporting requirements of the Trust.

Excellent knowledge of International and UK Financial Reporting Standards.

Expert knowledge of Standing Orders and Standing Financial Instructions which are the requirements of the NHS Code of Accountability and the Financial Reporting Councils combined code;

Knowledge of relevant NHS Policies and procedures;

Knowledge of cash management and the impact on cash of the strategic decisions of the Group.;

Expert Knowledge of Capital Accounting;

Knowledge of Integra Financial System;

Use of financial ledger and reporting packages.
